What is trauma?
Trauma is emotional shock that causes psychological damage that may be temporary or permanent. If you have experienced any traumatic circumstance including, but not limited to domestic violence, sexual assault, car accident, suicide attempts, devastation, sudden death/loss or any other incident that was traumatic please call the Advocates for help.
If you are a victim or have experience normal reactions which can include:

Physical Reactions: fatigue, insomnia, reduced activity, nightmares and startle reactions. |

Cognitive Reactions: difficulty with concentration, flashbacks and isolation. |
| • |
Emotional Reactions: fear, guilt, emotional numbing, anger, anxiety, depression and feelings of helplessness. |
What is sexual assault?Any unwanted sexual contact.

Uninvited sexual contact by force, threats, bribes, manipulation, pressure, drugs, alcohol or violence. |
| • |
Sexual assault is a crime committed primarily out of anger and/or a need to feel powerful or to control and dominate another person. |

What is domestic violence?Domestic violence is a crime. Battering is an intentional act to gain power and control over another person. Domestic violence is:

Physical Harm: shoving, pushing, hitting, kicking slapping and throwing objects at a person. |

Emotional Abuse: infliction of fear of imminent physical danger, isolation, withdrawal of finances and psychological harm. |

Verbal Abuse: name calling and put downs. |
Leaving an abusive relationship can be the most dangerous time for a victim.
Develop a Safety PlanIf you do decide to leave, take the following items with you. You may want to pack them in advance and keep them at the home of a friend or relative.

Birth certificates
Passports, green cards, work permits
School and medical records
Divorce papers
Lease agreements, house deed
Keys (house, car, office)
Insurance papers
Car registration & title
Address book
Medications
Pictures or items of sentimental value
Change of clothes
Children's favorite toy or blanket
